Times such as now really put perspective on how people need to be more prepared for unexpected occurrences. It makes sense to restock on supplies and be prepared for anything, now more than ever. Studies show that 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence in their lifetimes. With that being said, there are many essential supplies and tools that some women shelters are missing out on.

7. Extra Wide Cots

Many women come to these shelters with their child. Providing wider cots will make the stay just that much more comfortable for them. Making sure these women are relaxed is also vital as they probably have not been able to do so in quite some time. Giving them a less claustrophobic sleeping area will not only make them feel relaxed,but it will also make them feel safer.

6. Toiletries

This one should go without saying. It is very important to have a good amount of toiletries because odds are these women didn’t bring much with them. Some toiletries can include;

Having the right toiletries will make the women and children feel very cared for and understood. On top of this, it is important to keep the washrooms clean and fresh. Nobody wants to feel like they are in a run-down facility.

5. Hygiene!!!

You can probably tell by the heading that hygiene is very important. Like previously stated, no one wants to be in a dirty facility. With that being said, there are a few hygienic items that every women’s shelter should carry;

I shouldn’t have to explain why maintaining a clean environment is important. It just makes for a better experience. Another thing you should enforce is wherever anyone comes in, tell them kindly to take a shower because you never know if someone is carrying some kind of illness or virus. Also make sure all of your guests take showers everyday, especially if they go out during the day for things like walks or job hunting.

4. Entertainment

This can range from coloring books to a television set. These women and children are most likely at your shelter for some time, so making sure they have things to have their mind wander is crucial. Some stuff to consider could be;

  • Books/Novels.
  • Arts & Crafts Supplies.
  • Television Sets (with cable or a streaming service).
  • Board Games + Puzzles.
  • Table Games (billiards, table tennis, foosball).

The women coming to your shelter are going through a very rough time in their life. It is very important to get their minds somewhat distracted so they can develop some peace. On top of all of this, some women as you know have children. Kids get bored quite easily and this can be a big burden for the mother, these things will also keep their kids entertained. It is important to note that it is pretty unrealistic to have all of these things in a shelter, even just a few things can make the difference.

3. Kitchen and Food Supplies

It is important to have a good rotation of kitchen supplies. There are times where your shelter may not be busy, but also times where it might be packed. This is important to keep in mind
because you never know what supplies you will need and the amount you will need. Like Franz Kafka once said, “ Better to have, and not need, than to need, and not have.” With that being said, some essential (re-washable) supplies include;

2. Clothing

Clothing can almost always be received through donations. What is important however, is that before accepting the donation and handing clothes to recipients, you must have the proper tools to wash and dry the clothes. It is important to note that some of these women will be staying with you for an extended period of time and they may not be equipped with clothes or anything for that matter. You should accept all types of clothes and it does not matter what the gender of the clothing is. Make sure to always have plenty of warmer clothing (sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets) because people like to feel cozy and comfortable. Also make sure to have a decent supply of baby and kids clothes just in case. Make sure to have at least 2 washer/dryer sets to accommodate for any busy periods. As long as you have a method of donation, you should not have to buy clothing. People in the community will usually give a helping hand.

1. Protected Mattresses

With so many women and children coming in and out of your shelter, bed bugs are hard to avoid. It is important to have the means to stay sanitary. There are mattresses that are fireproof, waterproof and most importantly, bed bug proof. If that is not enough and you would like to be safer, there are mattress encasements you can buy that are bite proof and actually let the mattress last longer. There are encasements that prevent bacteria, bed bugs, mildew, mold and even dust mites. Investing in these types of products will allow the maintenance of your beds and mattresses to be much easier.

Conclusion

Having a good variety of supplies for your women shelter is very important because at times, you may need something unexpected. It is also important to note that over stocking things is something you don’t want to do as you want to keep everything fresh and looking new. Make sure to have a good rotation for things like dishes, clothes and bedding. You should always keep in mind that trying to be budget wary is not bad, always try to negotiate and keep your eyes peeled for any donations. Your community will always have your back and sometimes you can get some pretty cool stuff!
